These are practical reasons farms and stables use licks. They are not health or veterinary claims; animal owners should follow their vet's advice.

-
Natural sodium and trace minerals
Rock salt is mostly sodium chloride with small natural amounts of other minerals. Grazing and working animals lose sodium in sweat and need a salt source.
-
Animals take what they want
A lick is offered free choice, so horses, cattle, sheep, goats, camels and deer can lick at their own pace.
-
Lasts longer than loose salt
A solid block wears down slowly and is harder to spill, so less ends up trampled into the ground.
-
Stands up to weather
Dense rock salt copes with sun and dry heat better than bagged loose salt. Keep it out of standing rain.
-
Less waste, cleaner feeding
On a rope the lick hangs off the ground, away from mud and droppings, and is easy to check and replace.
-
Simple to hang
Tie it in a stable, field shelter or pen. One drilled hole, one jute rope, no holder needed.
